The importance of sports and games in school encompasses more than just the benefit of physical activity. Increases in self-esteem and mental alertness make school sports and games necessary for every school age child. Although the benefits of school sports abound, with a diminishing economy, many schools are cutting out sports and physical education programs to the detriment of students nationwide.
According to Theodore Hesburgh, author of “The Importance of School Sports and Education,” it is imperative for school age children to have access to sports and games. Not only does it empower youth and promote higher self-esteem, it also motivates students, enables them to earn better grades, especially in schools where obtaining certain grades is a pre-requisite to staying on the team. Numerous physical benefits include maintaining a healthy weight, preventing chronic diseases and learning the skills necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle after graduating.
Promoting physical activity should start from the nursery room, according to Jean Zimmerman and Gil Reavill, authors of “Raising Our Athletic Daughters.” Promoting athletics as a parent is a crucial factor in determining whether your child will be interested in participating in sports. Playing with your child, whether throwing a football or baseball with your son, or teaching your daughter how to swim, teaches them the importance of being active. Encouraging your school-age child to participate in a sport of their choice may be the reason they continue to play when they enter school.
Some children do not consider themselves athletic and may prefer not to play organized school sports. They may be cut from the school team for lack of ability. For this group, there are intramural teams, which are sports for those not interested or able to play higher level athletics. It is important to remember in these cases not to make your child feel badly about not being a higher level athlete, but to remember the more important benefits of playing sports, and encourage them in this endeavor.
With a tough economy, many schools are cutting spending for sports and athletics programs. Because of the many benefits of sports, it is imperative to continue the athletic programs available to children. As a parent it may be necessary for you to become involved on the school board to have a say about keeping athletic programs. Encouraging your child to speak up about their desire for athletics may also affect whether your school keeps their sports or cuts them out of the budget.
At university and colleges, the sports and social activities are just as important as the classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support.
Some people may think that sports and social activities are not important for students. However, I agree with the statement that the university and colleges should finance equally to sports and social activities as well as the classes and libraries because all those respects are significant to the students.
First of all, it is understandable that most of the university and college students are keen on sports as we can see the scenes on the playgrounds, the gymnasiums and some other exercises places. Admittedly, the young people are energetic enough to enjoy the sports and it is really necessary for to relieve themselves from stressful academic work or strengthen themselves through different kinds of sports. Imagining the condition that the students’ studying without sports, it is ridiculous. Therefore, the university and colleges have the responsibility to provide the students qualified sports areas, which calls for considerable financial support as they have spent on classes and libraries.
Secondly, when it comes to the social activities on campus, no university and college can overlook this issue. As we all known, after the students graduate from the university and colleges, most of them will enter the sophisticated society, in which social interaction is necessary. It cannot be denied that those social activities on campus can help the students a lot. For example, from variety of associations funded by the university and colleges, students can have more opportunities to communicate with each other, learn about their own weaknesses and then improve themselves gradually. Actually, I used to be a timid girl before, yet after I have had three-year experience in one of the university associations, I turn to be more confident and my capacity of communicating with others greatly improved. Thanks to those kinds of social activities in university.
Undoubtedly, the standard of the education should not be changed, as the university and colleges support the establishment of the classes and libraries in order to offer students a better studying environment. However, during several years, the students should aim to gain both knowledge and the all-round development which is advocated wildly in today’s world. Therefore, university and colleges have the responsibility to improve the facilities of all-round respects, especially the sports and social activities which have been always overlooked in the past.
All in all, to foster the students in an all-round way, the university and colleges should pay emphasize on the sports and social activities more and offer enough financial support.
