Education- a tool to awaken India

“Where the mind is without fear, and the heart is held high,
Where the world is not broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls,
Where the words came out from the depths of truth,
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habits,
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever widening thought and action –
Into that heaven of freedom, My father, let my country awake.”

Awakened India, beautiful India, this is the vision for India, Rabindranath Tagore had for his native land. The depiction seems so pleasant to be like. This is something we know that is good for us, something which should be the scenario. And we also know that it can be achieved through EDUCATION.
It does not matter to whom imparted, how imparted, where imparted, when imparted. What matters is that education must be imparted to all. It is every person’s need, which is even quoted as every person’s right under Article 21a of our Indian Constitution. When this is what we know, why should we care for the backlogs and hurdles? Where is the focus, the motivation to turn out to be best in the world with the tool of education?
In the present day conditions when there is fear wherever we are, whatever we do, a student has the confidence to express every thought present in the mind freely. When you are free from fear, nothing can stop you to venture a new idea, interrogate, create and innovate. And education is something which will get you this confidence. Education nurtures the soul of the student. The purpose of education is never just employment it is more for personal fulfillment and self-improvement. A person who is educated inculcates a sense of self esteem leading to satisfaction.
When looking at what education could be, we need to look beyond seeing education as a tool to train the mind for preparation of a job. Education teaches how to use our mind, how to respond peacefully, how to find and follow our passion. This just not comes from the bookish knowledge but from the overall environment of the institution. The education system can encourage students to think for them, question, debate, and form their own opinions and that will help them all to liberate, empower and socially reform to be good citizen.
The knowledge any student gains from subject or activity in education plays a crucial role in bridging the divide between people. It leads to better communication, touching our emotional and imaginative core, leading us to a better perspective for the welfare of humanity. It could be a key tool for promoting a more just and equitable society as it is education where an equal opportunity can be given to all from diverse backgrounds to learn well. This stands in sharp contrast to the hierarchy of the caste system, which stunts India’s growth even today.
Of course we cannot expect everything to transform right away, or even in a few years time; this process, of transformation of civil society, will take at least a generation to occur but that will be possible at a faster pace with the help of education.

  1. With the rapid rise of India’s middle classes opportunities for all increase in the education sector. Let’s hope India does in fact capitalize on this growing demand. However the education sector is an exciting environment to be part of for both investors, educators and potential students alike.
